FAILE
FAILE is the internationally acclaimed artistic collaboration of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Working together since 1999, the Brooklyn-based duo has become one of the most influential voices in contemporary street art, renowned for a dynamic multimedia practice that encompasses painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, murals and public art. Their work is instantly recognisable for its dense layering of imagery, combining fragments of comic books, pulp fiction, advertising, religious iconography, typography, popular culture and art historical references into vivid visual compositions.
Emerging from the street art movement of the late 1990s, FAILE first gained attention through the widespread use of wheat-pasted posters, stickers and stencilled interventions that appeared throughout New York and other major cities. Drawing inspiration from both urban culture and the visual overload of mass media, the artists developed a distinctive collage aesthetic that reflects the fragmented nature of contemporary life. Their works often blur the boundary between originality and appropriation, combining familiar cultural symbols in unexpected ways that invite viewers to reconsider the images and narratives that shape modern society.
At the heart of FAILE’s practice is an exploration of duality: high and low culture, sacred and profane, past and present, nostalgia and consumerism. Notable works include Deluxx Fluxx, an immersive interactive environment combining arcade culture, sound and visual art, and Temple, a large-scale installation in Lisbon that merged sculpture, architecture and ceramic traditions. These projects exemplify the artists’ commitment to audience participation and their ongoing effort to dissolve the distinction between art object, environment and public experience.
FAILE’s work has been exhibited at leading galleries, museums and cultural institutions worldwide, including projects associated with Tate Modern in London and major public installations in New York, Los Angeles, Lisbon, Hong Kong, Shanghai and elsewhere.
