Born in Berlin, Newton developed an early interest in photography and trained under the celebrated photographer Yva before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938. After periods in Singapore and Australia, where he served in the Australian Army during the Second World War, he established himself as a professional photographer and eventually settled in Paris, the city that would become the centre of his international career.

Working extensively for leading fashion publications including French Vogue, Elle, Paris Match, Playboy, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar, Newton revolutionised fashion photography by moving it beyond the studio and into real-world settings. His photographs combined cinematic drama, psychological tension and meticulous composition, often blurring the boundaries between fashion, portraiture and fine art.

Newton’s imagery is instantly recognisable for its bold visual style and exploration of themes such as power, glamour, sexuality and identity. His photographs frequently feature strong, self-possessed women presented in highly stylised narratives that combine elegance with elements of voyeurism, decadence, humour and provocation. While often controversial, his work challenged conventional representations of femininity and helped redefine the relationship between fashion photography and contemporary art. Among Newton’s most celebrated projects are the landmark photobooks White Women (1976), Sleepless Nights (1978) and Big Nudes (1981), bodies of work that cemented his reputation as a pioneering visual storyteller. His dramatic black-and-white photographs, influenced by film noir, luxury culture and urban life, have become some of the most recognisable images in photographic history.

Throughout his career Newton received numerous international honours, including France’s Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1990 and Monaco’s Officier des Arts, Lettres et Sciences in 1992. Major retrospectives of his work have been presented in leading museums and institutions worldwide, including exhibitions in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Turin, Moscow, Berlin, New York and Tokyo.

Today, Newton’s photographs are held in many of the world’s most important museum and private collections. His influence extends far beyond fashion photography, inspiring generations of photographers, artists and designers. More than two decades after his death, his work remains a benchmark for photographic innovation, celebrated for its technical brilliance, visual audacity and enduring cultural impact.
