Born in County Cork, Ireland, Clarke moved to England in the 1960s and initially pursued careers in journalism and advertising before deciding to study art and design. It was during his time at art college that he discovered photography, a medium that would quickly become both his profession and his passion. After studying at the West Sussex College of Art and the London College of Printing, he completed an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London in 1975, establishing the technical foundations that would underpin his later success.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Clarke developed a highly distinctive visual style centred on the female form. Influenced by fashion photography, film noir, fetish culture and glamour imagery, he created photographs that were both seductive and confrontational. His celebrated and controversial book Obsession captured this period of his career, documenting a fascination with power, performance, sexuality and style. The resulting images frequently featured women in dramatic settings and stylised poses, exploring themes of desire, fantasy and identity while challenging conventional attitudes towards erotic photography.

Although often associated with fetish and erotic imagery, Clarke’s practice was far broader than this reputation suggests. He worked extensively in advertising, editorial photography, celebrity portraiture and documentary photography, producing acclaimed campaigns for major international brands and photographing some of the most recognisable cultural figures of his era. His ability to move seamlessly between commercial commissions and personal artistic projects demonstrated a rare combination of technical mastery and creative independence.

Clarke published a series of influential photographic books, including The Illustrated Delta of Venus (1980), Obsession (1981), The Dark Summer (1985), White Heat (1990), Shooting Sex (2002) and Love Dolls Never Die (2004). These publications helped establish his reputation internationally and remain important references within the history of contemporary photography.

Often compared to Helmut Newton, Clarke brought a uniquely British and Irish sensibility to glamour and fashion photography. His work combined elegance with transgression, creating images that attracted both widespread acclaim and considerable controversy. Rather than merely celebrating glamour, his photographs frequently explored its darker and more complex dimensions, acknowledging the tensions between fantasy, power and human vulnerability.

Today, Bob Carlos Clarke’s photographs are held in leading public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Photography Collection, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, and numerous important private collections. More than two decades after his death, his work continues to be celebrated for its technical brilliance, visual power and enduring ability to provoke discussion about fashion, eroticism, beauty and photographic representation. His images remain among the most distinctive and uncompromising contributions to British photography of the late twentieth century.
